Box Lid Locker Organizer

Let’s Get It Together!

Getting off to a good start is so important for students as they begin a new school year. Organization is key to keeping up with assignments and deadlines and this simple project can help them keep track of basic supplies. However, this Box Lid Locker Organizer is more than functional. It’s an opportunity for students to express their personal style while decorating their locker.

Made from the lid to a shoe box and remnants of fabric, felt and trim, this locker organizer can easily be completed in one class period. Before students select the materials for their project, discuss with them the elements of a good design–color, use of space, balance, proportion, emphasis. Encourage students to approach this project as if it were a room to be decorated

Students will select fabric to cover the back and sides of their locker organizer and cut it to size using the pattern provided. This fabric will establish the overall design scheme for the project. When the fabric has been applied, a rectangle of cork or foam core should be glued into the back of the organizer. Position the felt piece across the front of the organizer forming a pocket. Glue the felt to the sides and bottom of the organizer. Trim can be applied to the sides and bottom of the lid and the edge of the pocket to complete the project.
