1 cup flour
1 cup water
½ cup salt
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
½ teaspoon cream of tartar

Food coloring

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients except food coloring in a saucepan and cook over medium heat until the mixture holds together. Be sure to stir constantly or mixture will stick to the bottom of the pan. When cooked sufficiently, the mixture will resemble very stiff mashed potatoes.
  2. Remove pan from heat and allow to cool.
  3. When clay is cool enough to touch, place dough on a sheet of waxed paper or parchment paper and knead in food coloring.
  4. Store in airtight container.

This recipe produces a soft, pliant dough that can be used over and over again. It will typically keep for 2 to 4 weeks.
