Fresh FACS Mission

Family and Consumer Science, often called Home Economics is a course of study that is as relevant today as it was when it was first introduced into the American school curriculum many years ago. Its core content areas of food preparation, nutrition, children and family studies, clothing construction, interior design and consumer economics have never been more important than in today's society. The educational materials that you will see outlined on this web site are designed to enable the FACS teacher to present these core concepts through a variety of "fresh" projects.

These projects were developed to improve student learning by going beyond the usual classroom experiences. Each Fresh FACS project is designed to

• Encourage creativity.

• Apply reading, writing, and math skills.

• Provide opportunities for curriculum integration.

• Encourage students to implement research skills.

• Provide opportunities for both individual and group activities.

• To utilize a variety of electronic devices in completing projects.

These projects are all classroom tested and both teacher and student-approved. Each one is complete with reproducible student information sheets, grading rubrics, transparency masters, and other support materials.

I have just retired from teaching Family and Consumer Science in Illinois after 32 years. During my career I was constantly searching for new and interesting ways to make our curriculum come alive for students. I believe passionately in the importance of Family and Consumer Science and the potential impact that it has on our students’ lives. This passion has lead me to develop the instructional tools that are offered on this web site. Even though I am no longer in the classroom myself, I am still very dedicated to the successful teaching of Family and Consumer Science at all levels.

My goal is to provide all FACS teachers with a one-stop source for information and resources that will make the very challenging task of managing the FACS classroom and curriculum easier, more fun, more productive and consistently relevant.
