Close to Famous is a warm and touching story of tragedy, triumph and baking. Foster has been faced with much adversity  in her young life–the death of her father, fight from her mother’s abusive boyfriend, homelessness and dyslexia. Her coping mechanism is watching the Food Network and baking the recipes she sees prepared. This novel couldn’t be a better fit for the FACS classroom. Close to Famous is particularly well suited for the middle school classroom.  Activities based on this novel are included in our resource A Novel Approach to FACS, Reading in the FACS Classroom. Including this novel in a child development, child care or family relations course is sure to generate some worthwhile class discussion. Students will be challenged to examine their own prejudices and attitudes regarding people with disabilities after reading this novel.
